Theory of the field-effect mobility in amorphous organic transistors
نویسنده
چکیده
The field-effect mobility in an organic thin-film transistor is studied theoretically. From a percolation model of hopping between localized states and a transistor model an analytic expression for the field-effect mobility is obtained. The theory is applied to describe the experiments by Brown et al. [Synth. Met. 88, 37 (1997)] on solution-processed amorphous organic transistors, made from a polymer (polythienylene vinylene) and from a small molecule (pentacene). Good agreement is obtained, both with respect to the gate-voltage and the temperature dependence of the mobility. PACS numbers: 72.80.Le, 85.30.Tv Submitted to Phys. Rev. Over the past twenty years, research into the applications of organic semiconductors (OSCs) has intensified rapidly. Though their electron mobility is much lower than that of typical semiconductors, OSCs show promise in low-cost, flexible, lightweight, and environmentally-friendly semiconductor applications. Their hole mobility was found to be comparable to that of amorphous silicon (a-Si), wit...

The field-effect mobility ~FEM! in polythiophene ~PT! polymer field-effect transistors ~PFETs! increases with reduced channel lengths during high driving forces across the source and drain, which is contradictory to the decrease in mobility caused by short-channel effects in amorphous Si thin-film transistors. The longitudinal electric-field ~across source and drain! dependence of the FE mobili...

Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) can be fabricated at moderate temperatures and through cost-effective solution-based processes on a wide range of low-cost flexible and deformable substrates. Although the charge mobility of state-of-the-art OTFTs is superior to that of amorphous silicon and approaches that of amorphous oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs), their operational stability general...
